Sergeant Leonard Russell Jansen served as B-24 tail gunner with 844th Bomb Squadron of the 489th Bomb Group. On the 25th of June 1944, he was flying in B-24 Liberator #42-94874, "Fay Day", when the aircraft was unable to reach altitude after takeoff and the mission was aborted. While attempting to land, the aircraft turned sharply to the left and crashed. Gas tanks and bombs exploded shortly thereafter.
