Ferd served as a Technical Sergeant & Top Turret Gunner/Engineer on B-17G "Sweet Anna" (#42-31526), 427th Bomber Squadron, 303rd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Pierce County, Wisconsin prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 12, 1941, prior to the war, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a mechanic and also as Single, without dependents.

Ferd was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 was shot down by Navy flak west of Helgoland Island, Germany and crashed into the North Sea during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.

A message from the War department was received here last Sunday afternoon stating that Tech. Sgt. Fred J. Janisch is missing in action.

Members of Eldon C. Kinne post of the American Legion went in a body to the home of the boy's mother, Mrs. Anna Janisch, in El Paso township, to deliver the message.

The telegram, addressed to Mrs. Janisch reads: "Your son, Tech. Sgt. Fred J. Janisch, has been missing in action since Jan. 4 in the European theater of war."

Sgt. Janisch the service in September, 1941. He was connected with the air corps.He was a waist gunner on a B-17 "Flying Fortress" bomber. The B 17 was hit by anti-aircraft or German fighters while on a daytime bombing mission over the submarine pens at Kiel, Germany. the entire crew was reported to have bailed out over the North Sea.

The host of friends of the family join in the hope that Fred may be safe somewhere in the war zone and word of such will son be received.

Was one of the Famous Flying Fortress of World War II the Hell's Angles who were the 303rd Bombardment Group who completed 25 missions as a heavy bommer in the 8th Air Force
