William Earl Jackson Jr was born 28 January 1924 in Toledo, Ohio to Edna L and William Earl Jackson Sr., he was their only child.

Although a Toledo, Ohio resident he enlisted in the Army Air Forces on 26 May 1942 entering service at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana; Army Serial Number 15102452. After gunnery and combat crew training he deployed to the ETO, United Kingdom.

William was assigned to the 715th Bomb Squadron, 448th Bomb Group, operating B-24 Liberators from RAF Seething, USAAF Station 146, located 9 miles (14 km) south east of Norwich, Norfolk, England.

On 9 May 1944, Mission No. 62, the 488th BG mission for the day was the railroad marshaling yard at Liege, Belgium. S/Sgt Jackson was serving in the tail gunner position with Skaggs Crew aboard B-24H-25-FO-42-95055, named "Bar-Fly" when killed in action, the plane returned to base.
