Carroll, who resided on Market Street, Laurel, Delaware, served as a Motor Machinist's Mate Second Class with the destroyer U.S.S. Fiske (DE-143), U.S. Navy, during World War II.

The Fiske was torpedoed by Japanese submarine U-804 on her starboard side amidship and sunk within 10 minutes north of the Azores during the war.

33 of her men were killed and 50 badly wounded by the explosion.

Carroll was declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking during the war.

He had served in the Navy for one year and three months at the time of his death.
