The S.S. Jacksonville, which was carrying gasoline, was torpedoed by German U-Boat U-482 while en route to Loch Ewe, Scotland. The gasoline exploded, giving little chance for the 49-man merchant complement or the 29-man Armed Guard to abandon the blazing ship, which broke in two at the second massive explosion.
The destroyer escort U.S.S. Poole (DE-151) rescued a fireman and one Armed Guard gunner which were Jacksonville´s only survivors.
Jack was declared "Missing In Action" in this attack during the war.
He was awarded a Purple Heart.
