Jack served as a Seaman First Class & Armed Guard, S.S. Jacksonville, U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland prior to the war.

The S.S. Jacksonville, which was carrying gasoline, was torpedoed by German U-Boat U-482 while en route to Loch Ewe, Scotland. The gasoline exploded, giving little chance for the 49-man merchant complement or the 29-man Armed Guard to abandon the blazing ship, which broke in two at the second massive explosion.

The destroyer escort U.S.S. Poole (DE-151) rescued a fireman and one Armed Guard gunner which were Jacksonville´s only survivors.

Jack was declared "Missing In Action" in this attack during the war.

He was awarded a Purple Heart.
