Herbert Hampy Missing Since St. Nazaire Raid Year Ago.
Colorado Springs, Dec. 2. - (A. P.)—Capt. Herbert W. Hampy, missing since Nov. 23, 1942, in a Flying Fortress raid on the U-boat pens at St. Nazaire, France, is now presumed dead, his sister, Mrs. Lorna Zobel, has been informed by the war department.
A native of Colorado Springs, Captain Hampy attended Colorado State college and Colorado College. He lived here with his sister. After enlisting in the air forces in 1940, he served on patrol duty over the Atlantic and Caribbean and in the ferry command before being sent overseas in September, 1942."

The Eighth Air Force mission was to fly combat missions over enemy occupied continental Europe. During that time, Captain Herbert W. Hampy served as Navigator, 322d Bombardment Group. During his period of overseas service from September through November, Herbert served in a B-17 bomber and was awarded the Air Medal for his combat missions over enemy occupied continental Europe. On 23 Dec 1943, Captain Hampy was awarded posthumously the Purple Heart for military merit and for wounds received in action resulting in his death. He was officially declared dead on 23 Nov 1943, one year to the day after he was reported Missing In Action while on an air mission over Vazaire, France.
