On October 9, 1943, Capt. English was on the crew of the B-17F #42-30012 during a bombing mission to the Focke-Wulf plant at Anklam, Germany. They were the lead aircraft in their group. One of their engines was shot out after attacking the target. They began to fall behind and were again attacked by enemy fighters, taking out more engines. They exploded and crashed into the North Sea off the coast of Norway.
