Dolive Durant graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1940. While there he was active in sports, especially baseball, wrestling, football and swimming. Some time after graduation, he became a Naval Aviator. He was killed when his plane went down in the Atlantic, due to an operational accident. Unlike the vast majority of Naval Aviators, he lost his life not in the Pacific, but in the Atlantic, near England. He was married to Martha Elizabeth Cameron.

He resigned from USNA, at the end of his second class year
