Herman was born December 29, 1913 at Caddo Mills, Hunt County, Texas, to the parents of Tone Dee Douthit and Beulah Hathaway.

From the 1940 St Charles LA census, Herman Douthit age 26 (born 1914 in Texas) was a roughneck on an oil well in St Charles LA. His wife Louise was age 26 and born in Tx. Also from the 1940 census, it states that in 1935 Herman lived in Celeste, Texas and Louise lived in Collin County, TX.

Herman Douthit of Celeste, Hunt County, Texas and Louise Vaughn of Josephine, Collin County, Texas were married May 17, 1938 in Carter County, Oklahoma.

Herman Douthit worked for Noble Drilling Corp of Tulsa, Oklahoma. This company took on the project of drilling for oil in Sherwood Forest, England. It was a secret mission. The British Army was running out of fuel; the Germans kept sinking their tanker ships and World War II was in full force.

On November 13, 1943 Herman Douthit, a well-respected derrickman, fell from a drilling mast to his death.

Due to wartime regulations, the shipment of his body home was impossible. Arrangements were made for the burial in the Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surrey, a short distance from London. After the war Herman Douthit's body was transferred to the American Military Cemetery and Memorial located near Cambridge.
