Otto served as a Staff Sergeant & Left Waist Gunner on B-17F "Thoroughbred" #42-3337, 548th Bomber Squadron, 385th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Polk County, Texas prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 12, 1942 in Houston, Texas. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a pattern and model maker and also as Married.

Otto was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 was attacked by enemy aircraft, severely damaged, and crashed into Baltic Sea during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
