TSgt. Courtney was killed in action on 3-8-1943 while serving as a radioman/waist gunner on a B-17 Aircraft with the 364th Bomber Squadron of the 305th Bomber Group, Heavy flying out of Chelveston, England with Colonel Curtis E. LeMay as their commander.

He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Clyde R. Courtney of 309 Glendale in Creve Coeur, Illinois, and he is a 1938 graduate of Woodruff H.S. in Peoria, Illinois, and was employed by Caterpillar Tractor Co. of East Peoria, Illinois before he enlisted on October 1, 1941, and did his training at the Radio School at Scott Field, Illinois, and the Aerial Gunner's School in Las Vegas, Nevada.

On August 13, 1942, TSgt. Courtney married the beautiful Miss Helen Wulzen of Streator, Illinois, and she now works at a Defense Plant in Los Angeles, California.
