Son of Joseph and Louisa Chelini of Colfax, CA. Former student at Placer Union High School and Placer Junior College. He played football, basketball, and baseball as an undergraduate. On March 26, 1941, in Salt Lake City, UT, he enlisted in the US Army. At the time of his death, he had been commissioned about six months and had served in the enlisted ranks for 18 months prior to that time. Recently arrived at an American base in England, he was co-pilot on a B-24 Liberator nicknamed "Vagabond King." The aircraft was on a bombardment mission to Norway when enemy aircraft was encountered. In the ensuing engagement, the Liberator sustained damage and fell into the sea. There were no survivors.
