John served as a Private in Radio Maintenance with the ground support crew, 334h Bomber Squadron, 95th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Fulton County, Georgia prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on January 27, 1943 at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, Georgia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Stock clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

John was "Killed In Action" at the Alconbury Royal Air Force Base in England along with 18 other airmen when, while loading B-17F (#42-29685), one of the 500 lb bombs exploded and caused a chain reaction of other explosions.

The explosions killed 19 airmen, severly injured 20 others, damaged 11 B-17's, and totally destroyed 2 others. The two B-17's destroyed were #42-29685 & #42-29706.
