Joe served as a Staff Sergeant & Right Waist Gunner on B17-G "Boomerang" #42-102610, 602nd Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Salt Lake County, Utah prior to the war.

B17-G #42-102610 took off, with a crew of 9, from Nuthampstead, England on a bombing mission over Bischofsheim, Germany. Shortly after takeoff this B-17 was seen with smoke trailing from the engines and to eventually crash into the English Channel. Upon impact with the water the B-17 exploded. Rescue operations found "1" crew member struggling in the water ( 1st Lt. Walker ) but they were unable to rescue him before he perished. The remains of "2" other crew members were also later found ( S/Sgt.'s Fox & Stewart ). The remains of the rest of the crew were never found.

Joe was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with "3" Oak Leaf Cluster.
