Lewis served as a Staff Sergeant & Tail Gunner on B-17G "My Desire" #42-37965, 323rd Bomber Squadron, 91st Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Los Angeles County, California prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 16, 1941, prior to the war, at Fort MacArthur, San Pedro, California. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Messenger and also as Single, without dependents.

Lewis was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17, after being damaged by enemy flak on a mission over Wilhelmshaven, Germany, crashed into the North Sea during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
