He listed Amelia Island, FL as home at the time of his enlistment. A native of Georgia, he enlisted May 18, 1944 Fort McPherson, Atlanta, GA. Prior to the war, been employed in skilled warehousing. He had an eighth-grade education. In the Florida State Census 1945 he, although away at war, was enumerated with his parents Otis and Betsey Ann Harris. His wife and infant son, Earl Jr, were in the household too. He was with "L" company of the 309th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry Division, which was also known as the "Lightening". A Cardinal Red patch with a bolt of lightening was proudly worn on the sleeve of this group. Service # 34946553

The 309th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry landed in France in 1944 and fought their way against the resistant of the German army through France, Belgium, and on into Germany capturing one town, one bridge, one roadway and one stronghold after another. On March 16, 1945, they had captured Bad Honnef, Germany, and two days later Earl Harris was KIA.

It is an honor to have Earl's name on the Nassau County War Memorial at the end of Centre Street on Amelia Island, FL. It was his hometown. He served his nation for less than 10 months...and Victory in Europe was May 6, 1945 less than 2 months after his death.
