Merrill, who resided on Brooklyn Avenue, Laurel, Delaware, served as a Staff Sergeant & Tail Gunner on a B-24J "Naughty Nan" #42-99949, 328th Bomber Squadron, 93rd Bomber Group, 8th Air Force, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He enlisted in the Army on September 17, 1943 in Camden, New Jersey. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as Single, without dependents.

Merrill was "Killed In Action" in the collision of his B-24 with B-24H #42-94969 which apparently lost control and hit the nose of B-24J #42-99949 during a bombing mission to Koblenz, Germany. Both B-24's crashed near Ingelmunster, Belgium.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

He had served the Air Corps for one year at the time of his death.
