Son of Charles H. E. Alter, Sr. who resided in Rochester, New York.

Charles served as a Sergeant in the 137th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided at 240 Curtis Street, Rochester, Monroe County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on April 20, 1943 in Rochester, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Retail manager and also as Single, without dependents.

He was injured in action in France on Nov. 8, 1944 and received a Purple Heart.

Charles was then "Killed In Action" during the war later in Belgium.

He was decorated with a Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
