Barnes, born in 1915 in North Carolina, enlisted in the United States Army for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law on October 12, 1943 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was married, had been employed as a driver, and had completed one year of high school.

Private Barnes, service number 34851976, a member of the Protestant faith, was assigned to the 329th Infantry Regiment 83rd Infantry Division. He was killed in action on January 12, 1945 - Battle of the Bulge - Bastogne - and interred at Plot D Row 8 Grave 35 at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery at Henri-Chapelle, Belgium, having been awarded the Purple Heart.
