Chief Justice of the United States. He was the son of Michael Taney IV and Monica Brooke. He married Ann Phoebe Charlton Key on 7 June 1806 and they had 7 children. Roger was admitted to the bar in 1799 and was elected assemblyman replacing his father in 1799. In 1801 he began law practice in Frederick MD and quickly acquired a reputation as an able attorney. Roger moved to Baltimore where he became advisor to Charles Carroll of Carrollton. He was appointed State Attorney General by Governor Kent in 1827 upon the unanimous recommendation of the Baltimore city attorneys. Roger left the Federalist party & became a fervent supporter of President Jackson. His appointment as Attorney General in 1831 was the first which gave a Cabinet post to a Catholic. He was named Secretary of the Treasury by Jackson in 1833. Because of political differences, the Senate refused to confirm him, and he resigned a year later. He was named to the Supreme Court and designated as its fifth Chief Justice on 15 March 1856. His confirmation was opposed by Henry Clay and Daniel Webster, both of whom later became his close friends. Chief Justice Taney administered the oath of office to 8 presidents, the first Martin Van Buren & the last Abraham Lincoln. His 90 page Dred Scott decision, one of the most momentious ever written, has long been considered one of the underlying causes of the Civil War. The city of Frederick, Maryland, erected a monument to him in St. John the Divine Cemetery. Chief Justice Earl Warren did the unveiling 24 October 1954.
