Born in 1903 at New York. He enlisted as a Private (ASN: 32622697) in the U.S. Army on 9 November 1942 at New York City. After basic military tarining, he was assigned to the 32nd Photographic Squadron, 5th Reconnaissance Group, 12th Air Force, USAAF.On 2 April 1944, he deployed from Hampton Roads, Virginia aboard the SS Paul Hamilton Liberty Ship (Hull #227), as part of Convoy UGS-38 (United States to Gibraltar); carrying supplies and the ground personnel of the 485th Bombardment Group of the United States Army Air Forces to Venosa, Italy.On the evening of 20 April 1944, the convoy was attacked in the Mediterranean Sea approximately 48 kilometers off the coast of Cape Bengut, near Algiers, by 23 German Luftwaffe twin-engine Junkers Ju-88 torpedo dive-bomber aircraft. One aerial torpedo struck the SS Paul Hamilton and detonated the cargo of high explosives and bombs, and the ship and crew disappeared within 30 seconds. Two other ships were also sunk, and all of the 580 men aboard were lost.
