C-47 #41-7811 took off, with a crew of 3 and 9 passengers, from Maison Blanche, Algeria on a Freight & Passenger transport mission to Oran.
While 10 miles out to sea a fire of unknown origin broke out in the right engine which caused the C-47 to crash into the sea. Only " 3 " passengers survived the crash and were picked up local fishing boats.
The " 3 Survivors of the crash " included 1st Lt. Walter H. Baker, 2nd Lt. Rachel H. Sheridan, and Sgt. Kenneth B. Conlin.
While still on the fishing boat 2nd Lt. Rachel H. Sheridan passed away.
She died "In The Line Of Duty" in this crash during the war.
She had served in the Army for one year and ten months at the time of her death.
