Husband of Myrtle Schlenker.

John served as a Seaman, First Class, U.S.S. Block Island (CVE-21), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Strafford County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

The Block Island was torpedoed off the Canary Islands by German submarine U-549 and had to be scuttled.

John was declared "Missing In Action" in this attack during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

John was one of only 10 sailors and aviators, out of 951, that was lost that day on the Block Island. The rest were picked up by the escort screen.

Service # 8068767

The Block Island received two battle stars for her World War II service. The Block Island′s planes, during her service, sank two submarines: U-220 on October 28, 1943 and U-1059 on March 19, 1944.
