August served as a Civilian and volunteer Ambulance Driver, American Field Services, with the U.S. Armed Forces in Northern Africa during World War II.

He resided in Los Angeles, California prior to the war.

August, while driving an Ambulance near Enfidaville, struck a mine on August 27th which caused him multiple injuries. He was captured by the German Army and became a POW. He died while a POW of his injuries the next day during the war. The German Army buried him next to the ambulance and his remains were later moved here to North Africa American Cemetery.

Husband of Mary Rubel and Dad of Gerald R. Rubel, Barbara F. Rubel, F. Shirley Rubel, and Nathalie T. Rubel who resided in Los Angeles, California.
