Corporal Alphus R. Roland died at sea during the attack and subequent sinking of the HMS Rohna on Nov 26, 1943. He was 32 years of age. The troop transport ship was on its way to the Suez Canal, taking 1300+ American soldiers to join the war effort in the Pacific Theatre.

Alphus was the first child and only son of Charles Francis Roland and his wife Luvena Mason, married July 30, 1909 in Clovis, New Mexico. Alphus grew up and married in Amarillo, Texas. He was a salesman for an oil exploration company. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp on Oct 24, 1942 in Lubbock, Texas.

Alphus' grandfather was Benjamin Sherrod Roland, who served in the Civil War as a Sergeant in the Texas 9th Infantry Regiment and was wounded twice. He would have been very proud of his grandson for his service to his country in a time of great need.
