Son of Webb and Pearl Hankins; brother to Geraldine, Janette, Lucille, Markey, and Alva. Married Earline Winters in 1938; entered Bible Baptist Seminary in 1947. Founded Bible Baptist Church in Walnut Springs, Texas on November 7, 1947. Graduated in 1950 and came to Ohio to start the Columbus Baptist Temple in September 1951. Within eleven years, the church grew to become one of the largest churches in the United States. Widowed in 1963, he married Dorothy Longfellow the following year. "Retired" in 1980 as pastor emeritus, but continued to preach across the country and pastoring pastors. Widowed again in September 1994, he married Ethel Morton the following year--on his 82nd birthday! Officiated at communion on New Year's Eve 1996...his final act of ministry four days before going home.
