Sergeant Russell E. Oaks was born in 1923 in Cambria County, PA, the son of Howard Sheldon Oaks and Jessie(Sensebaugh)Oaks.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces November 23, 1942. Russell was a Sergeant in the 322nd Fighter Control Squadron, bound for Burma. He was lost at sea when the troopship HMT Rohna was sunk in the Mediterranean Sea by a guided bomb from a German bomber. His body was never recovered. Sergeant Russell Oaks was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.
