Ormand A. Mattox, son of, Leo Albert and Oma (Norberg) Mattox.

Ormand A. Mattox graduated from Custer High School in 1943. He worked in a mining industry before entering the service.

He entered the service on April 20, 1943, as part of Company B, 8th Armored Battalion, 1st Replacement Depot. Mattox trained at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Fort George G. Meade in Maryland. Pvt. Mattox was sent overseas on October 4, 1943, to serve in the African Theater, aboard the British ship Rohna, which was off the coast of Djidjelli, Algeria, on its way to India.

On November 26, 1943, the Rohna was bombed and sunk. Rescue efforts were hindered by many factors. As a result more than half of the 1,981 American military personnel on board perished. The official date of death for those 1, 015 men, including Ormand Mattox, was November 27, 1943. His buddy wrote home to Ormand's parents:

On November 25, we had our Thanksgiving dinner on the boat which was canned turkey. The sea was rough that day and of course most of us got sea sick. Nov. 26 was still stormy weather. That afternoon we were attacked by German aircraft and unfortunately our boat got it. Ormand and I were sweating it out together. When we got hit, it was quite a scramble to get on deck and we got separated. Ormand got off on the low side, I got off on the high side. By that I mean the boat was sinking and was tilted pretty bad by the time we got off. We all had life preservers but the Mediterranean was very rough that night. None of us ever saw Ormand again. All of us who were picked up, realized that if one was not picked up that night, there would be no hope. So many were lost.

Army Pvt. Ormand Mattox was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at North African American Cemetery, Carthage, Tunisia.
