James resided at 341 Savannah Road, Lewes, Sussex County, Delaware prior to the war.

B-24J #42-40256 took off, with a crew of 10, from Libya on bombing mission over the Sedes Airdrome in Greece. They never returned from this mission and are believed to have been lost at sea due to enemy action.

James was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

He had served in the Air Corps for one year and eight months at the time of his death.
