David, who resided at 2205 Lamotte Steet, Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Motor Machinist's Mate Third Class on the U.S.S. Holder (DE-401), U.S. Navy during World War II.

The Holder, while escorting a convoy bound for Mediterranean ports, was attacked by German torpedo bombers. A torpedo struck the escort vessel amidships on the port side, causing two heavy explosions. The Holder, however, survived the attack.

David was "Killed In Action" in this attack during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He had served in the Navy for nine months at the time of his death.

Service # 8126543

David was the only Delawarean lost on the Holder.

The Holder received one battle star for World War II service.
