The Holder, while escorting a convoy bound for Mediterranean ports, was attacked by German torpedo bombers. A torpedo struck the escort vessel amidships on the port side, causing two heavy explosions. The Holder, however, survived the attack.
David was "Killed In Action" in this attack during the war.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
He had served in the Navy for nine months at the time of his death.
