Martin served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on B-24D #41-11806, 345th Bomber Squadron, 98th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Linn County, Oregon prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on December 16, 1941 in Portland, Oregon. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Filling Station Attendant and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24D #41-11806 took off from Benina Base in Libya on a bombing mission to Calabria Airdrome, Italy. After successfully dropping their bombs they collided, for an unknown reason, with B-24D 41-23785 while returning from the mission. Both planes crashed into the Mediterranean sea.

Martin was declared "Missing In Action" in this collision during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters.
