PAUL HELTMAN IS KILLED IN NORTH AFRICA: WORD OF YOUNG ATTORNEY'S DEATH IS WRITTEN BY FELLOW OFFICER
Lieutenant Joseph Paul Heltman, aged 35, an intelligence officer of the United States air corps and son of Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Andrew F. Heltman of 2624 Beale avenue, is reported dead in the line of duty in north Africa.

The word was received unofficially but most authoritatively by his wife, Mrs. Grace M. (McNee) Heltman of Delancey, N.Y., last Tuesday, April 13, in a letter from a fellow officer and close friend, who wrote assuming that the death had been reported by the war department.

The sad information was brought to the parents in Altoona over the week-end by a sister, Mrs. Frank D. Bricker of Glen Rock, N.J. Despite the sorrow of the family, Rev. Heltman fulfilled an engagement yesterday at the Juniata Presbyterian church.

WRITES OF DEATH
The letter written by the fellow officer read in part: "It is extremely unfortunate that I write to you to express my felicitation. Paul's sudden death touched us all and particularly myself, who had known him best and longest.

"Whatever manner you were officially notified was probably very impersonal and although I'm not permitted to give the exact circumstances, I do want to reassure you that he died in the line of duty and died bravely. It was unexpected and swift, but he was conscious to the end and remained calm. We lost two other good men at the same time and really feel their loss."

The letter concerning Lieutenant Heltman's death was written on March 23, while the last letter received from him was written on March 19.

NATIVE OF COLORADO
Joseph Paul Heltman was born in Idaho Springs, Colo., on July 5, 1907, a son of Rev. Andrew F. and Olive B. (Long) Heltman, and came to Altoona with his parents in 1917. He was graduated from the Altoona High school in the class of 1924, attended the University of Pittsburgh for two years, secured his bachelor degree at Geneva college and his law degree at Ohio Northern university in 1933.

For several years he was affiliated with the securities exchange commission in Washington, D.C., but for four years prior to entering the army air corps had located in Kent, O., where he was rapidly establishing a fine practice.

He enlisted and applied for a commission on Aug. 6, 1942, serving as a second lieutenant in the air corps intelligence service. He was trained at Miami Beach, Fla., Dow field, Me., Mitchell Field, N.Y., and at Austin, Tex., being sent to north Africa this spring.

Lieutenant and Mrs. Heltman were married on May 20, 1939. There are no children.
