Son of Sylvester Attleman Fortin & Mary Frances Thurston Fortin.

He enlisted in the Army on November 19, 1942 in Portland, Maine. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in a foundry and also as Married.

Walter was declared "Missing In Action" when the HMT Rohna was sunk by the Luftwaffe in an air attack in the Mediterranean north of Béjaïa, Algeria during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
