Walter served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided on Belhurst Drive, Irondequoit, Monroe County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on March 25, 1943 in Rochester, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Teacher and the head of the Dramatics Department at the Charlotte High School and also as being Single, without dependents.

He was a 1930 graduate of the University of Rochester.

Walter was declared "Missing In Action" when the HMT Rohna, on which he was a passenger, was attacked along with four other ships, by multiple Luftwaffe Heinkel 177 aircraft and sunk. The Rohna was the only ship sunk in this attack.

This attack was the largest loss of U.S. troops, 1,015, at sea due to enemy action in a single incident during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
