Alfred served as a First Lieutenant and Pilot on C-47B #44-76406, 1202nd Air Air Force Base Unit, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Johnson County, Iowa prior to the war.

C-47B #44-76406 took off, with a crew of 3 and 18 passengers, from Accra, Ghana on a transport mission to Robert's Field, Liberia. For an unknown reason "Mayday's" were heard from the C-47. They disappeared and are believed to have crashed into the sea near Takordi, Ghana. All 21 on board were lost.

Alfred was declared "Missing In Action" on this flight during the war.
