Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until July 9, 1943.

Matthew served as a Staff Sergeant on a B-24, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. This B-24's number is not recorded on military records.

He resided in Greene County, Pennsylvania prior to the war.

Matthew was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-24, while on a mission with 4 other B-24's, was attacked by approximately 15 to 20 German Messerschmitt 109's. His B-24 was seen by others to be on fire and crash into the Mediterranean about 25 miles north of Mersa Matruh, Egypt during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
