James served as a Civilian and Pan Am Ferry Pilot with the U.S. Armed Forces in Northern Africa prior to the start of World War II. The news article incorrectly note him as a Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps.
He resided in Rhode Island prior to the war.
He died prior to the war when his British Hawker Hurricane crashed on the runway at Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana. It was noted that the crash was due to "misadventure".
