T/Sgt Frank J. Conlon Jr. was the radio operator-gunner of a B-17F #124374. He and the crew had self-deployed from Maine to England (it took a week!), stopping in Newfoundland, Greenland BW1, Iceland, Preswick Scotl, and finally to Covington, UK. They flew a few missions with the 8th Air Force against targets in France, then their group (301st Bomb Group - Heavy) was ordered to North Africa to join the newly formed 12th Air Force after the successful Allied invasion of North Africa on 11/8/42. Conlon's aircraft arrived 11/26/1942, and their first mission was to bomb Rommel's supply docks in Bizerte, Tunisia on 11/28/1942.

According to the 301st Bomb Group history, Conlon's plane (353rd Squadron) made their bomb run on three engines. After releasing their bombs (from fifteen thousand feet), Conlon's aircraft descended rapidly while under attack by six ME 109s. With its guns still firing, the bomber crashed into the (Mediterranean) sea and exploded. No chutes were seen, and the entire crew (of 9) was presumed to have perished. Shot down 11/28/1942, declared MIA, and on 11/28/1943 the entire crew was declared KIA. More details in MACR (Missing Air Crew Report) #16038.
