John's remains, along with the rest of his crew, were recovered in 2000 and they were interred in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

John served as a Staff Sergeant & Engineer / Gunner on a B-26 #41-17759 "Horse Feathers", 437th Bomber Squadron, 319th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 8, 1941, prior to the war, in Buffalo, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a furnacemen and also as Single, without dependents.

B-26 #41-17759 took off, along with 6 other B-26's and a crew of 6, from Telergma on a bombing mission near the El Aouina airport at Tunis, Tunisia. While over the target they were hit by ground and ship based anti-aircraft fire and crashed in the Tunis Harbor. The entire crew was lost in this crash. The other 6 B-26's returned to base safely.

John was first declared "Missing In Action" and after his remains were recovered his status was changed to "Killed In Action".

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
