Spencer served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on a B-25, 487th Bomber Squadron, 340th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Berks County, Pennsylvania prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on June 4, 1942 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Paymaster, payroll clerk, and/or timekeepers and also as Divorced, without dependents.

This B-25, along with others, attacked the airdrome at Soliman, Tunisia. However they were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire and were seen going down in flames and crashed, possibly at sea, during the war.

Spencer was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
