Clayton served as a Second Lieutenant on B-26 #41-17791, 444th Bomber Squadron, 320th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on May 21, 1942. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Salesmen and also as Single, without dependents.

Clayton died in the "Line Of Duty" when his B-26 crashed near Ascension Island for unknown reasons during the war. The crash was believed to be a non-battle related incident.
