Leo E Abben was born on October 14, 1918 in Wisconsin to William and Sina Abben.. In 1941 he was working as a Maintenance man in Racine. He had enlisted in the Army Air Forces and held the rank of First Lieutenant.He served with the Air Transport Command, 4th Ferry Group, 26th Squadron as Navigator on a B-26A. In the preparation for Operation Torch, the wing participated in the movement of five groups of light and medium bombers to provide immediate reinforcement after the amphibious landings in North Africa.Reinforcements for the Twelfth Air Force also ferried their planes via the South Atlantic Wing's routes. As winter weather set in, light and medium bombers destined for England were encountering severe problems navigating the North Atlantic Ferry route and were diverted to the South Atlantic. Abben was reported missing and ultimately declared dead on August 1, 1942. Recorded circumstances attributed to: "Missing in action or lost at sea". They were transporting the plane from the United States, through South America to Africa, and were on the leg between Brazil and Ascension Island when they disappeared.

Abben was the navigator on B-26A #41-7371, assigned to the Air Transport Command, 4th Ferry Group, 26th Squadron. They were transporting the plane from the United States, through South America to Africa, and were on the leg between Natal Brazil and Ascension Island when they disappeared.
