Robert's remains, along with the rest of his crew, were recovered in 2000 and they were interred in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

Robert served as a First Lieutenant & Bombardier / Navigator on a B-26 #41-17759 "Horse Feathers", 437th Bomber Squadron, 319th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Mecklemburg County, North Carolina prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 22, 1942 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as an Office Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.
B-26 #41-17759 took off, along with 6 other B-26's and a crew of 6, from Telergma on a bombing mission near the El Aouina airport at Tunis, Tunisia. While over the target they were hit by ground and ship based anti-aircraft fire and crashed in the Tunis Harbor. The entire crew was lost in this crash. The other 6 B-26's returned to base safely.
Robert was first declared "Missing In Action" and after his remains were recovered his status was changed to "Killed In Action".
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
