Casualty of WWII,he was Lord O'Neill, the 3rd Baron O'Neill,Lord Lieutenant of County Antrim, Ireland, and the son of the late Captain, The Honourable Arthur Edward Bruce O'Neill, M.P.,and of Lady Annabel Hungerford O'Neill, of South Kensington, London. His father was killed in the early months of the Great War whilst serving in the Life Guards and was the first sitting Member of the British House of Parliament to die in that war.His mother,Annabel Hungerford Crewe-Milnes (born 31st August 1881-died 14th June 1948)was the eldest daughter of the Marquess of Crewe KG, and became Lady Annabel Hungerford Dodds, having married secondly on 9 February 1922, Major James Hugh Hamilton Dodds CMG. (later Crewe-Dodds)

Lord O'Neill was educated at Eton, and succeeded his grandfather as third baron in 1928. At one time he held a commission in the 8th Hussars. In 1929 he joined Gillett Brothers Discount Company as a director.He married, in 1932, Ann Geraldine Mary, eldest daughter of The Honourable Guy Lawrence Charteris,second son of the eleventh Earl of Wemyss,and had a son and a daughter.The son, The Honourable Raymond Arthur Clanaboy O'Neill, was born in 1933.
Shane served as Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Armoured Corps,North Irish Horse,Service No: 36738.He was 37 and left a widow,Lady O'Neill, of Shane's Castle, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland.
His younger brother also fell. He was The Honourable, Captain Brian Arthur O'Neill of the 1st Bn., The Irish Guards,Service No:49895.He was killed in action on May 14th 1940 and having no known grave is commemorated on the Brookwood Memorial, Surrey, England, Panel 8. Column 2.
