He was born April 23, 1927, in Cleveland, and lived most of his life in Elyria. He was U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. Fayer was employed as a J.C. Penney Co. fixture foreman for the northeastern United States region for 22 years, retiring in 1989. Before that he worked as a carpenter foreman for Matt Herman Construction Co., Elyria, for 12 years.


He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, American Legion Post 12 and AMVETS Post 32, all in Elyria; a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America since 1946; and an associate member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Hinkson-Hysell Post 3341, Grafton. He was a charter member of the Isaac Walton League of America Ely Chapter, which he served as president in 1964 and helped to organize; and was a counselor of the junior chapter. Fayer was active in conservation and received the volunteer Conservationist of the Year award from the Outdoor Writers of Ohio in 1964. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, woodworking, and making wood flag cases for deceased armed forces members.


Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Portia (nee Petruzzi); daughter, Pamela DeLancy of Sheffield Lake; sons George Fayer IV of Elyria and Alan Fayer of Grafton; brother, Raymond Fayer of Grand Rapids, Mich.; and four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Services are private and there is no funeral home visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 43099 N. Ridge Road, Elyria, OH 44035. Arrangements by Bauer-Laubenthal Funeral Home, Elyria.
