Missionary to India, Founder of Isabella Thoburn College
Undaunted by the challenges facing her, Isabella arrived in Lucknow on January 7, 1870 to fulfill her dream of bringing education to the women of India. Three months later, six timid young girls became her first pupils--the school, one room in the Lucknow bazaar. As money became available she was able to purchase a large building which she converted into a boarding school. The boarding school became a high school, and eventually a college. She died of cholera after thirty-one years of devoted service to the Methodist Episcopal Church and its missionary work. She is quoted as saying, "I cannot remember the word 'fear' had any place in the household vocabulary. If it was right to go anywhere, go we must, in darkness or storm or danger. Not to go was never mentioned as a possibility, and so not thought of."
