As a Japanese WW2 P.O.W., Willie lost his life when the ship he was on was torpedoed in the Pacific Ocean. The Suez Maru was sunk by the American submarine SS Bonefish because it was not displaying a Red Cross flag. Before embarking on the Suez Maru, Willie's last camp was Liang, on Ambon.

Willie, along with 548 or so other Dutch and British P.O.W.s were victims of the 'Suez Maru Atrocity'. The 414 British POW's are commemorated on a Suez Maru Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum, Staffs.

Willie is also commemorated on the Blairgowrie and Rattray War Memorial and a Post Office Memorial, both in Blairgowrie, Perthshire.
