The ill-conceived, heroic, and fateful assault in 2 lines on the Turkish trenches at THE NEK Gallipoli took place on 7 August 1915. The attack was launched in an Easterly direction from the Australian trenches on Russells Top.
Not one of the 10th Light Horse Regiment troops actually reached the Turkish trenches with 37 men being Killed in Action
Turnbull was in the company of 4 other South West men who lost their lives in this action ( 718 – Davis, R. D. Trpr, 170 – McAliece, E. Sgt, 147 – Snudden, W. J. Trpr, 143 – White, E. J. Trpr )

Alexander Phipps TURNBULL was born in Dardanup W.A., being Grandson of Sir James Lee- Steere. Alexander went to Hale School then Perth High School and was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1907. He then went to Merton College, Oxford University in England to study Law. Phipps, as he was then known, was a keen sportsman, representing Oxford in Rowing and Football. During his tenure at Oxford, Phipps served with King Edward's Horse Regiment for 3 years, before graduating in Jurisprudence ( Law ) in 1910, with First Class Honours.
Phipps was admitted to the Bar in England in 1911. He later returned to Western Australia to practice as a Barrister/Solicitor with the Perth Law Firm, Parker and Parker.
Alexander Phipps TURNBULL enlisted for War Service on 5 October 1914, before transfer to the action at Gallipoli where he was tragically killed at The NEK, Walkers Ridge, Anzac, Gallipoli on 7 August 1915.
