He was the son of Francis James Barnes and Queenie Kate Barnes. He was Flight Sergeant in the Royal Australian Air Force, 27th Operational Training Unit. Service Number: 30581. William enlisted with the Royal Australian Air Force on the 29th August 1940 at Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. He was killed in action on the 21st January 1944 when the Wellington BJ 652 crashed at Smerill, Derbyshire. He died aged 27 yrs. He is commemorated on the Australian War Memorial.
